On their return to Great Britain their plane was badly damaged and the crew bailed out over Romney Marsh while Flt Lt W Johnson kept the plane flying; it had crossed the British coastline at Hythe at around 2,000 feet and the last man jumped at 800 feet. The plane then crashed killing Flt Lt W Johnson - he was awarded the D.S.C. posthumously and was also nominated for the Congessional Medal of Honour.
