Johnson's Corner

On the 13th February Flt. Lt. Johnson and his crew (Lt H Johnson, Lt G Nye, Lt W Francher, Sgt J Higgins, Sgt K zerger, Sgt E Williams, Sgt P Bartkus, Sgt P Hazzard, Sgt P Simpson) took off from Rattlestone in Suffolk in their B.17 Bomber http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-17_Flying_Fortress

On their return to Great Britain their plane was badly damaged and the crew bailed out over Romney Marsh while Flt Lt W Johnson kept the plane flying; it had crossed the British coastline at Hythe at around 2,000 feet and the last man jumped at 800 feet. The plane then crashed killing Flt Lt W Johnson - he was awarded the D.S.C. posthumously and was also nominated for the Congessional Medal of Honour.
